Frequently asked questions
STOCK Act, PTR disclosures, and how to read Congressional trade data
Are members of Congress allowed to trade stocks?▸
Yes. Federal law currently permits members of Congress and their spouses to trade individual stocks, with the obligation to disclose those trades publicly under the STOCK Act of 2012. The data on this page is a real-time view of those mandatory disclosures.
What is a Periodic Transaction Report (PTR)?▸
A PTR is the disclosure form a member of Congress (or their spouse / dependent) must file every time they buy or sell a security worth more than $1,000. It must be filed within 45 days of the trade and is published by the House Clerk and Senate Office of Public Records.
Why are trade amounts shown as ranges (e.g. $1,001–$15,000)?▸
Congressional disclosures are required to report trade size only as a bracket, not the exact dollar amount. We surface both the bracket (as filed) and the bracket midpoint (for ranking) so the data is comparable across members without overstating precision.
How fast must Congress members report their trades?▸
Within 45 days of the transaction, per the STOCK Act. In practice the gap between trade date and filing date varies dramatically by member — we show both timestamps on every row so you can spot late filers.
Which lawmakers trade stocks the most?▸
Activity is heavily concentrated in a small group. Nancy Pelosi (and her husband Paul), Dan Crenshaw, Josh Gottheimer, Ro Khanna, and Tommy Tuberville are typically among the most active filers. The full ranking is on the page above and updates as new PTRs are filed.
Where does the Congress stock trades data come from?▸
It comes directly from the official disclosures published by the U.S. House Clerk and the Senate Office of Public Records. Every trade you see on OpenStocks links back to the original PDF or HTML disclosure.
